Let it snow, let it snow! There is a lot to be said with those words and the song that goes with it. I was one of the stranded souls trying to get back to NYC this past week (Dec. 24-30).
I got caught in the storm twice. It hit in Illinois where I was with family on Christmas Eve. Soft, fluffy and so serenely quiet. I shoveled my mother out many times and while doing so I had Christmas carols running through my head. I even made games out of my shoveling patterns. How fun this was. Christmas Day saw me shoveling one more time and then making a snowman! I loved it all and had little thought as to what the effects of this storm might do to the east coast.
Sunday night is when my adventures in travel began. As my mother puts it, I am one where some sort of adventure will always be attracted. My Monday flight canceled at 10pm Sunday. I was originally told I would not make it back until midnight Saturday. I began to experience frustration. I needed to get back to work and I was going to incur the extra cost of a new plane ticket. People were offering advice and I knew it was good but I was losing patience and did not want to hear "You should have..." When I admitted to myself that their advice was sound, I tried alternate things such as trains and cars but to no avail. All were sold out. Finally I managed to land a flight out late Wednesday. Relief!
The day of my departure was met with heavy fog and the possibility of freezing rain by the time my flight was due to leave. Plus, I had to gamble on the one hour drive to the airport. My patience ran out and I had full understanding of the frustrations all stranded people were having!
The fates were with me. My flight which was originally delayed actually left on time and I made it to Atlanta by 10pm, caught a flight to Charlotte, NC and spent the night on the floor of the Charlotte airport. Ironically, it turned out to be lots of fun — a 24 hour Starbucks, floor polishing going on, lots of other stranded people, and laughing!!!!!
I made it back to NYC by 8am Thursday morning and went right to work, luggage and all.
I could have looked upon this adventure as something bad, annoying and negative. It sure started that way! But I find it very hard to stay in this place for any length of time. I am not comfortable when cranky, no matter how tired I am. There was nothing I could do about the situation, so I decided to make light of it once I realized where I was allowing my thoughts to take me. Not pretty! I used to be one who looked upon the victim mode as the only way and through a lot of self reflection, courses and guidance by mentors, I was able to learn to shake these patterns. I see them surface, recognize them and shift.
I switched my thinking and brought up memories of how excited I would get when little, allowing wonder to fill my heart (future blog). So I decided to make this a wonder-filled trip. I reveled at the beauty of the lights when flying over Atlanta. I made new friends and deflected their angst with stories and my high energy. I found the floor of the NC airport to be a relief to stretch out on and felt safe as there was security everywhere as well as other sleepers. When getting overtired, I found others to share the hilarity of the situation and the more ludicrous it got, the funnier it got until our joined laughter filled the airport at NC and made others want to join in the fun. My stomach hurt from the laughter. Now THIS is the way to travel, not the exhausted, negative way I had started the trip! I loved the beauty of the snow over NYC when flying in, even though I knew the havoc it had created.
By the time I landed, I was still buoyed by the fun I had made this journey turn into and was able to sustain myself throughout the long work day with this uplift.
